Which reader to use in java to read characters like ®,£ and many in XML in MarkLogic?

I am using XMLStreamReaderHandle to insert XML which is encoded with UTF-8.It is working fine.But when i read the same file using DOMHandle i am unable to read the special characters.Are there any others Handles to read special charters from MarkLogic?
